HOW TO CARE FOR YOUR PIANO

A QUICK GUIDE on servicing, envoronmental stability and cleaning

A piano is a perfect balance of wood, metal, felt, and craftsmanship — a finely tuned instrument that can withstand the test of time if properly cared for. Regular maintenance not only ensures optimal performance, but also preserves the instrument for many years to come. There are several important factors to consider when looking after your piano, and consistent upkeep is essential. Below, you’ll find some expert tips for ensuring the highest level of care:

Environment

Humidity and temperature changes can significantly affect the sensitive materials within a piano. Fluctuations can cause the wood to expand and contract, which may lead to tuning instability, sticky keys, or even damage to the soundboard.

Tips:

-Keep your piano in a room with a stable temperature, ideally around 20°C.

-Maintain humidity levels between 40–60%. A hygrometer can help you monitor this.

-Avoid direct sunlight and do not place the piano near radiators, fireplaces, or other heat sources.

Tuning

Maintaining both tone and structural integrity is important — even if your piano isn’t played regularly. At Markson Pianos, we offer a comprehensive tuning service to help keep your instrument in optimal condition. Get in touch with our team to arrange your next tuning.

Tips:

-We recommend tuning your piano 2–3 times a year if it is new or played regularly.

-For less frequently used pianos, a minimum of once a year is advised.

Cleaning

Keeping your piano clean is important, and doing so carefully and gently will help prevent any damage.

Tips:

-Use a microfibre cloth, which is soft and gentle enough for both the keys and the piano body.-Avoid spraying any liquid directly onto the piano, especially the keys.

-Slightly dampen the cloth with water and add a small amount of mild soap to tackle stubborn stains.

-Avoid using products that contain harsh chemicals, as these can damage the finish and internal components.

More Useful Tips:

-Play it regularly! Keeping the action moving smoothly through regular playing will help maintain its condition — and you’ll be more likely to notice any changes in tone or touch.

-Keep the lid closed when the piano is not in use to protect it from dust, spillages, and accidental damage.-Use a piano cover to shield the instrument from dryness, dampness, and humidity fluctuation.
