Bösendorfer’s latest limited-edition creation pays homage to arguably the finest and most beloved of all Japanese artworks: The Great Wave woodblock. From Katsushika Hokusai’s series Thirty-Six Views of Mount Fuji, The Great Wave off Kanagawa has inspired a whole generation of painters, including Claude Monet, Vincent van Gogh, and Gustav Klimt, as well as composers such as Claude Debussy in his orchestral work La Mer.
Bösendorfer’s relationship with Japan dates back to the mid-nineteenth century, when Austro-Hungarian Emperor Franz Joseph I gifted a Bösendorfer grand piano to Japanese Emperor Meiji. This marked the first time a piano had been seen and heard at the Japanese court, and this magical encounter sparked an intense and unique musical collaboration that continues to this day. In creating this limited-edition homage, Bösendorfer’s craftsmen have scaled up the artwork to cover the underside of the piano lid using a special printing process. Continuing the color theme, variants of Prussian blue decorate the inner rim of the piano and the upholstery of the piano bench. As a beautiful counterpoint, the cast iron frame reflects the significance of the color red in Japanese culture, symbolizing the sun and offering protection. This edition is limited to 16 instruments worldwide and is housed in the magnificent 214VC grand piano. Dimensions
